Wang Yi Warns of Three Dangerous Trends Regarding the New Development across the Taiwan Strait
2022-08-10 23:48

In his recent engagement with the foreign ministers of Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and Nepal, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expounded China's position regarding the new development across the Taiwan Strait.

Wang Yi stressed that the visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to China's Taiwan region has proved to be an out-and-out political provocation. This act is a serious breach of the commitments made by the U.S. side and a gross violation of China's sovereignty. China has every reason to respond with necessary and resolute countermeasures in order to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, to uphold non-interference in internal affairs, a basic norm governing international relations, and to truly safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Wang Yi pointed out that this visit has also proved to be an out-and-out political farce. Pelosi's stunt will only make the international community see more clearly what a hegemon and bully the United States is. It would only cement the consensus among countries on upholding the one-China policy. It would only further rally the Chinese people to steadfastly  advance the great cause of national reunification.

Wang Yi said that, with the situation across the Taiwan Strait still evolving, it is especially important that we stay vigilant against three dangerous trends:

First, we must be vigilant that the United States, unwilling to accept defeat, might gang up with others to fan the flames and add oil to the fire, beef up military deployment in the region and further escalate the situation in an attempt to create a new and even bigger crisis.

Second, we must be vigilant that the "Taiwan independence" forces, misjudging the situation and overestimating their abilities, might continue to intensify its collusion with internal and external elements and go even further down the path of splitting the country and the nation.

Third, we must be vigilant that politicians in some countries, ignoring right and wrong, might jump on the bandwagon of hyping up the matter. Some might even attempt to copy this political stunt to serve their political self-interests. This will seriously undermine the political foundation for exchanges with China and severely impact the UN Charter and the post-war international system.

Wang Yi said that the Chinese government has officially released a white paper titled The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era. The white paper gives a comprehensive overview of the history, policies and propositions on the Taiwan question, with the aim to set the record straight and send the most authoritative message to the world. We are ready to work with friends from all countries who love peace and uphold justice to resolutely reject all words and deeds that interfere in China's internal affairs, firmly resist all adventurist moves that jeopardize peace across the Taiwan Strait, and jointly safeguard the one-China principle, defend the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and maintain regional stability and world peace.
